English as an Additional Language (EAL) & Accelerated Language Program (ALP)
Hong Kong is becoming an ever-growing global city with families relocating from many parts of Asia, North and South America and Europe. This means many children arrive in Hong Kong with limited exposure to English. For families looking for a high-quality international education in Hong Kong, this can mean limited choices. Stamford American School offers not only an academically rigorous standards-based curriculum, inquiry-based learning approach and progressive STEMinn education, it also offers two programs for students requiring additional support in English.
The Accelerated Language Program (ALP) is designed for children who have little to no proficiency in the language. The ALP is a dedicated stream in which students follow the same mainstream curriculum as their peers, but within their own dedicated classroom alongside other ALP students. This enables students to benefit from smaller class sizes with the support of a homeroom teacher as well as expert English as an Additional Language (EAL) support teachers. The students in this stream typically graduate to mainstream classes within one academic year, where they continue to receive support.
EAL in the mainstream enables English language learners to develop their language skills in an immersive English environment. Stamford limits the number of students accepted into this program stream to maintain the English speaking dynamic of the class. Alongside this, daily Spanish and Mandarin classes are provided to expand students’ linguistic horizons, preparing them from the global nature of the 21st Century.
